How eBay fees work in 2026

For most categories eBay keeps 13.6% of the total the buyer pays (item, shipping, and tax) plus $0.40 per order, or $0.30 when the order is $10 or less. A handful of categories run higher or lower, and a few switch rates at a price threshold. The fee follows the category eBay files the listing in, which is why the tool above asks eBay rather than guessing from a keyword.

Why does eBay take 13.25% on some items and 13.6% on others?

The final value fee depends on the category the listing is in. Most categories are 13.6% of the total sale plus a per-order fee. Trading cards, comics, and coins are 13.25%. Books, movies, and music are 15.3%. Jewelry, watches, and handbags are 15% at everyday prices. Two similar items can land in different categories and pay different rates.

What is the cheapest category on eBay for fees?

Heavy equipment (3%) and guitars and basses (6.7%) have the lowest published rates, followed by athletic shoes at 8% once a sale reaches $150. But you cannot choose a category for its rate: eBay assigns fees based on where the item belongs, and it moves or removes listings placed in the wrong category. The useful question is which of the categories your item honestly fits is cheapest, which is what this tool answers.

Can I list in a different category to pay a lower fee?

Only if the item genuinely belongs there. eBay's policy requires listing in the most appropriate category, and listings in a wrong category can be moved, ended, or count against your account. Some items fit more than one category legitimately, and when those categories carry different rates, picking the cheaper one is fair game.

Is the eBay fee charged on shipping too?

Yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, the shipping you charge the buyer, and sales tax. Offering free shipping does not reduce the fee; it just moves the shipping cost into the item price.

What is the per-order fee?

On top of the percentage, eBay charges $0.40 per order, or $0.30 when the order total is $10 or less. Athletic shoes sold at $150 or more are the exception: that 8% rate comes with no per-order fee.

Do buyers pay a fee on eBay?

No. eBay charges the seller. Buyers pay the listed price, shipping, and any sales tax, and none of that is an eBay fee to them.

Does this include eBay Store rates?

No. These are the standard rates for sellers without an eBay Store subscription, which is most resellers. Store subscribers pay slightly lower percentages in some categories.
